In early June, a swastika was spray-painted across a mural of Black baseball legends Jackie Robinson and Minnie Miñoso at Historic Dorsey Park in Overtown. In response, Overtown residents and leaders held a press conference condemning the act of hate and affirming their commitment to moving forward.
On Wednesday, commissioned muralist Douyon joined city officials, community members, and representatives from the Miami Marlins to unveil the restored murals and announce the launch of the Historic Dorsey Park Mural Restoration & Renewal Project.
This reimagining goes beyond simply repainting. After conversations with Overtown residents and community leaders, the project will place an emphasis on health and wellness by incorporating community paint days and other activities that strengthen connections and foster a deeper sense of belonging at the park.
I was on site capturing the event through Urgent Inc., a Miami-based nonprofit, documenting the unveiling and the community’s response.
